Where I’m From
I am from the 100 year old piano in the living room. The piano where it all started. Where I played my first notes. From “Big Red” and “G Car”. All of the cars and trucks my dad would buy. All of the breakdowns. Not one car newer than 1998. I am from the cozy little ocean house on the end of the street and the salty air that filled my lungs every night. The sweet smell of ocean that I would wake to every morning. The constant rust of anything metal. I am from the little avocado tree that I got for Christmas. Whose tiny branches reached out with determination as it stood by its 25 foot tall relatives.
I am from “The Rusty” and “Lavender Larry”. Two favorites for surfboards. From “Callaway” and “Eisenstein”. I am from annual trips to Southern Baja(The Bermuda Triangle) and setting up the Christmas tree with my sister when I come back. From constant sibling fights and make-ups. I am from saying blessings in hebrew during Hanukkah, With my Mom’s side of the family. And saying grace at Christmas with my Dad’s side of the family. I am not religious myself.
I am From Daniel Blaine and Carol Joy. From egg salad and chicken soup. From my dad getting surgery during 9/11, and waking up in astonishment and sorrow. And from Calvin Klein asking my grandpa to start a clothing business. To which my grandpa declined. From my childhood friend “Cuppy”, a plastic sippy cup. Whom my mom proceeded to run over to show me the dangers of playing in the street. I am from those moments where you love life, and you never want to let go of the moment that you are in. I am from the piano, where it all started.
